The Pepper Festival recently took the Paqui #OneChipChallenge by eating a tortilla chip coated with Carolina Reaper (Guinness Book of World’s Records holder for the hottest pepper on the planet) seasoning. It is – by far – the hottest chip in the world. The Carolina Reaper pepper clocks in at a whopping 1.5 million + SHU (Scoville Heat Unit), so this is not for the faint of heart.
Pepper Festival founder Rick Tracewell and his son Nico took the challenge in the name of promoting the festival and because they clearly like to inflict pain upon themselves.
The Pepper Festival is a food, music and fun festival raising money for children’s charities. It will be held on June 23, 2018 at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in beautiful Auburn, California.
After doing research on how to “beat the heat” of hot pepper burn, the pair decided to have the following items handy:
- Whole Milk – It’s the fat in the milk that reduces the burn, so it’s not recommended that you use low-fat or non-fat dairy.
- Sour Cream
- Pineapple Chunks
- Orange Juice – The acid neutralizes the base of the pepper burn (capsaicin).
Most of these worked, but the burn of the Carolina Reaper pepper limits the relief to a second or two before coming right back. It took a good 30 minutes for the burn to be completely gone. Yikes!
